onto today’s topic: an appreciation for artistry 🎤

2 nights ago i saw omar apollo in concert. it was a spur of the moment decision (we bought pit tickets the morning of) and i’m so glad it happened.

my favourite concerts all have one thing in common: beautiful artistry. by artistry i mean intertwining production, the band, vocals, and performance to be so unique to the artist and impactful. 🪩

omar apollo didn’t just sing us a concert. he performed. the intentionality behind each song in the set was evident and i was so immensely impressed by the sheer talent on stage from the unplanned added songs to dancers to crazy vocals to guitar solos.

despite generally having a discography of slower, sad songs, a vibe ranging across all emotions was created. he paid homage to his culture and rapped in spanish, then had everyone swaying to a beautiful contemporary performance followed by a whole lot of dancing on stage and getting everyone hyped.

i don’t think i’ve ever felt moved by a performance like that (i didn’t think i was even capable of feeling emotions from art … 💀), and the feeling was indescribable. listening back to his discography now, it’s like dopamine surges anew with each song. phenomenal.

at the end of the set, i couldn’t count how many times my friend and i just stared at each other and said, “wow.”
