onto today’s topic: bad habits should be broken 👊
i have a bunch of bad habits, just like any of us do. some of them are rotting in bed and on my phone first thing in the morning, snacking or picking at my cuticles.
the first step is recognizing these bad habits. the second is a solution. i’ve found that simply willing myself to stop and leaving it solely up to my self-restraint is really hard. instead, i try implementing “blockers” that keep me away from the bad habit.
for example with my cuticle habit, i paint my nails and avoid picking at them because i don’t want to chip the paint LOL. it’s simple, maybe a little silly, but it works. with my morning bed-rotting habit, i countered it with a good habit — hitting the gym every weekday at a fixed time. i’m forcing myself out of that bad habit until a good one replaces it. another strategy i’ve used for this same habit has been scheduling meetings for 30 minutes after my alarm so i have to get up. 😴
snacking is a tougher habit to break. i haven’t yet thought of any blockers (besides simply not buying any snacks to begin with), so it really is a self-restraint solution.
self restraint and discipline is always hard, especially if you’re trying to break out of a bad habit. funny how that works … it’s just as hard when you’re trying to build a good habit. 😭 it’s like we naturally choose the easy way out. it takes a lot of mental fortitude to be disciplined and it’s one of the most valuable characteristics you can develop.
if bad habits are negatively impacting my well-being or work, it’s worth the effort trying to break them. :)
