i see the term āsocial entrepreneurshipā thrown out a lot, and i wanted to concretely define it for myself, so iām taking you along with me for this mental solidification.
broadly, itās pursuing entrepreneurship (starting your own business) with a social mission at its core. a social entrepreneur is motivated by their desire to solve some kind of systemic social or cultural problem.
itās when āi want to make the world a better placeā is actually executed upon. šÆ
itās honestly hard to stick to being a social entrepreneur when the promises of 10x revenue and vc funding draw you towards building b2b saas startups. thereās nothing wrong with that either, itās just not social entrepreneurship and can never claim to be regardless of how much money is poured into external csr initiatives.
csr stands for corporate social responsibility, which is when a business adopts policies, guided by ethics, that positively impact society. for example, a company may set up educational programs in poorly funded neighbourhoods; however, that does not mean the company is a product of social entrepreneurship.
social good needs to be the core of the businessā operations. š«¶
iām curious, if youāre interested in social entrepreneurship, what problem areas light your fire? lmk, genuinely. :)
