onto todayās topic: generalized instruction š
lessons are taught as a one size fits all method.
immediately, we can all tell this is extremely flawed. we donāt all learn the same, so those that are more compatible with a teacherās teaching style have an advantage in learning the content whereas the others fall behind, forced to play catch up on their own. š
i remember being able to grasp most of my grade 12 ib bio content from just my teacherās lectures alone; however, in grade 11 i had to read through supplemental content and watch videos to understand since my teacherās style of instruction didnāt resonate.
i was fortunate enough to be able to access different forms of the same content. in a lot of cases, content in school is only presented in two ways: textbooks and lectures. šļø
this is extremely limiting for a lot of students and they fall into this cycle of not understanding anything in class, thinking theyāre not smart enough, and then holding themselves back from cool opportunities that are reserved for āsmart peopleā that get good grades.
generalized instruction is a huge problem in school. the same way we need personalized healthcare to meet each patientās specific needs and circumstance, we also need personalized education suited to studentsā learning style and goals.
clearly, ai has a lot of potential to bridge this gap in generating personalized learning plans and/or content for students. i hope to see schools starting to adopt personalization powered by tech very soon.
