onto today’s topic: hi spotify wrapped 🎵 

my top 5 songs of 2024:

1. feel it - d4vd

2. needle - nicki minaj (ft. drake)

3. role model - brent faiyez

4. slide - calvin harris (ft. frank ocean & migos)

5. witchy - kaytranada (ft. childish gambino)

i don’t know if it’s just me, but spotify wrapped felt lackluster this year. we were simply shown our top songs, artists, listening minutes, and some weird ai-generated phrase that described our listening history’s vibe for a few months. that’s it.

there was no creativity in displaying the endless data spotify has about us, let alone even telling us our top genres. last year’s wrapped was an experience that compared our listening activity to different people around the world and actually followed an animation theme and style. i’m not saying it was, but it sure felt like ai spit out the entirety of the experience from design to data visualization choices. 🤷‍♀️ 

i look forward to the 10 minutes of obsessing over my spotify wrapped every year, but the experience was underwhelming this time around. we were just given information we could literally get ourselves from any website that pulls from spotify’s api and our listening data (like obscurify or volt.fm). the unique insights and creative direction is what typically sets apart spotify’s year-end wrapped, but it didn’t meet the mark.

the only excitement came from the social vibe of everyone checking out their own stats and comparing. 📱 you can’t bet on the community alone to uphold a product or experience, even if you’re a large company.
