onto today’s topic: i don’t do 10 year plans 🕙️

i have a goal for what i very broadly want my life to look like in 10 years, but do i have an itemized plan to reach it?

nope.

i’ve intentionally stayed away from doing that.

i know that i want to start my own thing or join an interesting venture early stage and be on a good self-sustaining financial trajectory, but i haven’t set deadlines at a 2 year, 5 year, or 8 year mark for certain milestones (kpis, if we’re feeling extra nerdy 🤓).

mapping my life out that long-term feels restrictive, not comforting. many people find this kind of plan to be a source of comfort and security, however i find it to be akin to a hovering parent or lingering source of restlessness.

if my goal of raising money for my own startup is 4 years down the line in my 10 year plan, i’ve inherently created complacency for my present self. if i just know what my goal or vision for life is by the next 10 years without all the excessive planning, i’m more comfortable experimenting with unconventional paths, experiencing and riding the wave of serendipity, and enjoying life the way it’s meant to be: unpredictable.

10 year plans are like shackles to me. let me explore beyond what i can imagine within lines of a planner and pen. 🖊️

i had a 10 year plan in 9th grade — it’s kind of a given when you think you want to be a doctor. once i stopped thinking so stiffly, my life became a lot more colourful, not just in my happiness but also in my career opportunities, academic success, and relationships.

everything doesn’t need to be planned, especially not life, although a general vision and goal is important to work towards.
