onto today’s topic: interesting food culture 🥑

canada certainly isn’t the top country in food quality or culture, but over the past 2 months i’ve definitely noticed a stark difference. even while i lived in san francisco last year, i didn’t realize it because the bay area feels very detached from the rest of america.

maybe this is more of a reflection of dining halls and the associated consumption culture rather than america as a whole. regardless, i wanted to share my 2 cents. 🪙

i would say my family is decently health conscious, particularly thanks to my mom’s intentionality behind all of the lunches she packed for my siblings and i growing up. we naturally fell into the habit of wanting to diversify our plates with colour and being mindful of our own sugar intakes — not because we were restricting ourselves, but because it felt good to do so. 🥒

the idea of having a large-sized carbonated drink to accompany each meal is wild to me. in our household, drinking pop was a luxury we’d partake in if we went out to eat or if we ordered pizza to be delivered to our house. not only that, it was also exclusively a dinner-time thing. having multiple cans a day? unheard of.

that’s not to say i’m shaming anyone that does, i’m just remarking at the difference between food consumption culture from my perspective.

despite having a devastating sweet tooth (thanks dad), i’m actually quite mindful of my sugar consumption. eating multiple sweets a day just feels unhealthy, and that has nothing to do with body image or weight. it just simply feels unhealthy and like i’m doing my lifestyle a disservice.

each meal being 4 different courses is also strange. breakfast shouldn’t be a plate of sweets in the morning, but that’s just my take. 🤷‍♀️
