7th grade me took it for granted 🧘‍♀️

onto today’s topic: mindfulness 🧘‍♀️

in 7th grade, my teacher made our whole class sit in silence every day for 10 minutes of “mindfulness time.” the lights would be turned off, and she would play random soothing music in the period. we had to be completely silent and take deep breaths, meditate if you will.

at the time, i thought it was silly. honestly though, it’s probably impossible to successfully make twenty 7th graders sit with their friends in silence for 10 minutes. 😭

now that i’m older, i would honestly love if 10 minutes of my day were forcibly carved out to make me close my eyes and take in the present.

in a nutshell, mindfulness is essentially the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. it involves focusing on the present rather than mulling over the past or worrying about the future. 🤔 this can be cultivated through meditation, breathing exercises, or simple activities like mindful eating or walking.

it sounds pretty vague, but taking a few minutes out of your day to just soak in your surroundings and ground yourself is effective in reducing stress, improving focus, and enhancing your overall well-being.

it doesn’t strictly take the form of sitting in the dark with a random meditation soundtrack — this can be going on a walk, laying in the grass outside, or filling out a colouring book. the only rule is to be present with it.
