onto today’s topic: minimizing redundancy 😵💫
i attended unc’s orientation over the past 2 days, and in all honesty, the sessions were all very redundant.
i understand the importance of the different pieces of information shared, but the repetition presentation method was unnecessary.
coming out of it, i can’t say i learned much more about the school and how it works (more than i already knew). i did, however, meet a lot of cool people, which was the best part. 🤞
redundancy is best minimized when information is conveyed in the correct manner. a simpler example, unrelated to my orientation experience, is whether or not some information merits a meeting or email communication.
if your message can be summarized in 2 sentences, it belongs in an email. there is absolutely no need to waste time booking a meeting, having that meeting, and then following up on it.
meetings for every little decision is redundant. presentation sessions for a single bullet list is also redundant. a lot of what we were told could’ve been summarized in a single email or slideshow, so the repetitive introductions and service explanations were an inefficient use of time. ⏰
i would have much rather spent the time in sessions experiencing the campus instead. we all made the trip to campus after all, so it only makes sense to do things we’d only be able to do there.
