onto today’s topic: obsession with typology 🤓
humans have a weird obsession with wanting to categorize ourselves and others into different boxes and personality constraints. my hypothesis as to why is because personalities feel so unpredictable, and assigning someone an archetype feels easier to manage.
typology refers to the classification of individuals into distinct personality types based on certain traits, characteristics, or behaviour patterns. as humans love to do, it’s a way to organize and understand the complexity of human personalities by grouping people who share similar psychological attributes. 🧠
a few common ones you might recognize include mbti (i’m an entj!), the four temperaments, and the disc personality assessment.
while i agree that practicing typology can be fun and an interesting point of discussion with others (i had a huge typology phase myself), holding it to a truth beyond just that is harmful. after all, all human beings are, without exception, unique and one-of-a-kind individuals. one entp will never be the same as another, so how could you possibly think both people would act the same way? sure, you could make general inferences, but they’ll always be unfounded until you actually get to know their unique self.
humans aren’t a couple letters spit out by a survey.
