overstuffed luggage

japan travel curse 🎒

onto today’s topic: overstuffed luggage 🎒

i have fallen victim to the japan travel curse: buying way too much without enough room in my luggage.

i brought an empty carry-on suitcase and my full 50L backpack to japan and now they are both completely stuffed — and that was before hitting up tokyo. so you can imagine that i have a bit of a problem now.

i’ve got 2 large plastic bags of goods i bought in the last two days with no clue where to put them. for some reason, i decided buying 2 rugs would be a good idea (they’re studio ghibli themed, so i still think the purchase is valid).

i have a few possible options (also open to ideas LOL):

1) buy another backpack → i technically haven’t yet used my personal item allowance and could buy a smaller backpack and stuff that with a packing cube to free up some space. only problem is that i don’t know if it’ll be enough room. 📦️

2) buy another suitcase → i could simply buy another suitcase and check that in alongside my large backpack. i will definitely be able to pack my stuff comfortably but lugging around all of that cargo is a pain — not to mention the extra baggage fees and purchasing the suitcase is expensive.

3) wear layers like crazy → wearing 7 layers is a classic strategy that i could resort to. being uncomfortable for a 17h flight home to toronto isn’t appealing to me though. i will, however, save myself from any extra costs.

let me know what you think, but i’m leaning towards option #1!
