onto today’s topic: rupa health 🩺

i’ve noticed many healthtech startups focused on improving administrative inefficiencies have similar business models: charging clinics/clinicians subscription fees. interestingly, rupa health is entirely free for clinicians. i’m spending a lot of time right now looking into different business models that work in the health startup space, because that tends to be the hardest part of scaling in this industry so i thought this would be a particularly relevant startup spotlight.

essentially, rupa health is an all-encompassing b2b2c platform that simplifies the process of ordering and managing advanced lab tests for functional medicine practitioners. by streamlining everything from test selection to results tracking, it helps providers offer more personalized and data-driven care to their patients. the company generates revenue by charging a small processing fee per lab order, which is typically passed on to the patient.

let’s talk numbers! 🤓

rupa health operates within the growing personalized medicine and specialty lab testing markets, which had $89 billion in spending in 2020 and have been growing at a cagr of 15-30% annually for the past 5 years (source).

the healthtech startup hit $15.6 million in revenue with a 114 person team in 2023 (source) and increased to an impressive $22.3 million in 2024. following that momentum, rupa health was acquired by fullscript in october of 2024 (source).

questions i’d be interested to ask:

  • what were the key considerations in going forward with an acquisition exit strategy?

  • what does the user flow look like for clinicians?
