onto today’s topic: school spirit 🏫
one of the largest differences i’ve noticed between canadian and american colleges/universities is how fierce the students and faculty are in demonstrating their spirit.
in canada, nobody cares that much for their school. you won’t see people decked out in uni merchandise or being extremely in-the-know about any university-related news. in america, however, the representation is actually crazy. 😵💫
i believe it has a lot to do with the sports culture. athletics aren’t a big deal in canada, whereas the united states tends to be at the center of a lot of major sporting events.
i just moved into school at unc chapel hill, and i’m reminded again how much i love this campus and its vibrance. people really love their school here, and it’s infectious. the sea of carolina blue flooding practically the entire state makes me feel like i’m genuinely part of a community, and it’s quite a contrast when compared to any of the universities i ever visited in canada.
i don’t even care much for watching sports, but i’ve already caught myself defending and rooting for our teams with such vigour. 😭
there’s more to educational institutions than just the degree they provide, and that has been made pretty clear with all of the spirit events, sports, and people.
