onto today’s topic: small, scrappy teams 🔧
today i had the amazing opportunity to speak with stephen chau, a founding member of the team that started uber eats.
seeming to have done it all, he said that his favourite moments that he looks back on were still when he was hacking away in his scrappy early team at uber eats. the office banter, making pivotal decisions, and being able to sit around a table and all eat lunch together.
i definitely agree (not that i’ve worked at big tech). there’s an addicting charm to being your completely unfiltered self at work, and others doing the same. it’s like an extended friend group, but working towards the same mission in the same space, in a more structured way.
early stage startups are very hit or miss. i’m so glad i hit a straight bullseye.
✅ culture fit
✅ mission alignment
✅ fun work
✅ tech advancement
✅ fun people
✅ happy hour
✅ real impact
it’s a lot of fun working with a easy-going culture, but still prioritizing rapid execution and operations so we are actually changing lives.
if you’re really inclined on working in big tech or large corporations, just give tiny scrappy startups a chance. there’s infinite learning and your way of thinking will be challenged so much more than you can imagine. not only that, startups open so many doors.
would you work with a small, scrappy team?
