onto today’s topic: weekly startup spotlight 🩺

i was scrolling through yc’s s24 batch of startups and my attention was lassoed in by soma lab.

briefly, soma lab aims to improve student training in medical schools via ai simulations of patients and various health scenarios. they’re a b2b startup founded by tiko bdoyan and vrishank saini, and are selling to medical institutions and schools as they strive to provide a solution to burdened physical resources and outdated training practices. 📚️

healthcare workers are in a perpetual shortage, and the government is now mandating more seats in medical school — the problem still persists that there are limited clinical training slots and residency positions. to be a doctor, you need to have training with patients. hospitals are already overflowing with patients .. another hundred resident fellows will only make matters worse.

let’s talk numbers! 🤓

the global medical education market size is forecasted to increase by $185.66 billion us dollars, at a cagr (compound annual growth rate) of 20.88% between 2023 and 2028 (source). i wasn’t able to find any additional statistics on the platform’s current usage/value.

questions i’d be interested to ask:

  • how transferable is the experience gained from a simulation to real-life scenarios?

  • what medical institutions are you currently working with?

  • what are current metrics on time saved, money saved etc.?

  • what does the onboarding process look like for institutions? for medical students?

that’s soma lab!
