onto today’s topic: something i want to dip my toes in 💼
i thoroughly enjoy exploring and learning about new ideas, especially when it’s in the realm of tech and innovation.
i’ve had a number of different experience in the startup realm, but the funding and venture capital (vc) side still feels largely unfamiliar. i definitely want to dip my toes in the space, at least for a summer, because it’s literally the best way to get a feel for so many different startups at once. not only that, the aspect of vc’s providing technical or operational expertise to startups is exciting to me. 📊
working on a new project so regularly is a big piece that piques my interest and i know there’s a lot of room for learning and growth for me personally in that entire space.
briefly, venture capital is a form of investment for early-stage businesses (startups) that have very strong growth potential (normally within tech, health sciences and finance sectors). a typical founder-vc firm relationship basically looks like the venture capital firm handing the founder a check in return for equity, which is basically stake in the company. for example, a deal between vc firm (x) and startup (z) might look like a $2m series a round for 10% equity.
essentially, x just bought a 10% stake in z for $2,000,000. x is now a part owner of the company and is entitled to 10% of z’s profits and assets. the vc firm will also provide strategic and operational expertise to assist in decision making, recruitment, and other large developments. typically, a partner is designated to each company in a vc’s portfolio. 🗃️
all of the different companies a vc firm invests in makes up that firm’s portfolio.
as you can tell, partners or interns at vc firms likely talk to many different founders, consult various ideas, and talk through countless decisions on a daily basis. that’s something that excites me and i’m looking forward to getting a feel for the space.
