onto today’s topic: sports in america 🏈
never in my life have i cared about american football.
one of the most notable differences between canada and america is sporting culture and how passionate americans are about it. you won’t see university campuses electrified with school colours or families from all over the province coming to cheer on their college teams in canada. 🇨🇦
there’s also absolutely no shot you’d see poles getting greased and the entirety of toronto getting trashed if the raptors won the nba.
i didn’t even know the eagles existed as a football team before this school year — all i knew was that tom brady was a good quarterback and he was on the patriots. 😭 now, i somehow know all of the jalen hurts lore, and was repping the eagles like crazy last night (shoutout to my philly readers).
people care a whole lot about their sports here, and i find it a little funny, endearing even, on a college level where chapel hill shows out in a sea of bright blue on game day.
on a more serious level, however, the ridiculous spike in domestic violence in proportion to major sports events is disheartening. it’s fun to cheer for a team and build a community around that fanbase, but it truly is never that deep to the point of getting into fights and causing harm. 😐️
maybe i’ll pull up to more sports games now — it was fun eating snacks and dishing out unsolicited commentary with a group of friends. (:
go heels!
