the pressure to niche down
screw niches, everything is connected 📌
welcome to introspection ft. harsehaj! ⭐️ i’m harsehaj, a 19 y/o always up to something in social good x tech.
this publication is a place for me to reflect on productivity, health and tech, and drop unique opportunities in the space right to your inbox daily. if you’re new here, sign up to tune in! 💌
btw, feel free to reply with topic ideas you want me to write about for future posts.
onto today’s topic: the pressure to niche down 📌
from a young age, we’re told to find an interest and develop it into a spike. we’re told niching down and becoming a master at one thing is the only surefire route to success.
i don’t think that’s true at all, and i think that’s a ridiculous expectation to put on people, especially kids. you’re telling me 17 year olds are supposed to pick a major and decide on what they want to do for the rest of their lives?
we don’t even know what life has to offer. 🌎️
human beings are complex. there are so many layers to us. even with this blog, i knew the key to growing it rapidly would be to niche down on one topic and publish a post 1-2x/week. but, i don’t have just one interest and i most definitely don’t want to just write about one thing.
this blog’s niche is me. i am the niche. my raw thoughts, followed by opportunities i find cool.
screw niches, everything is connected. of course it is, all those connections blend together to make you. i don’t believe focusing on one specific problem, industry, interest or ideal is the way to live unless you truly do have something you’re happy devoting all your energy to, but that’s not the case for most people. ⚖️
if you read any online article on how to scale a business or social media following, one of the tips is always to niche down. i won’t say it doesn’t work, because it 100% does — that’s how you build a loyal community behind an idea/brand.
what i am saying is that we don’t have to bring that principle to dictate our personal life. you, as a person, don’t have to niche down into an “archetype.” if you come up with an idea for a business or blog and want to scale it, you probably do have to niche down to an extent. that doesn’t stop you from exploring more ideas across different industries and topics though, right?
do you see where i’m getting? 😋
your perspective and individual personality isn’t niched down, but maybe the byproducts of your interests are presented as niches to the world.
