onto today’s topic: unsolicited advice 🗣️

for feedback, criticism, and advice, my advice is to always take it with a grain of salt. collect enough grains of salt so that your conclusion is significant enough to act upon. of course, that advice in and of itself should also be taken on a case-by-case basis. if you’re seeking advice on applying to a program from an alum, their words likely have a lot of validity. the grains can be a little more dense when you’re the one seeking advice from the right people, rather than a stranger offering up an unsolicited opinion. 🤷‍♀️

i’m not saying they’re wrong — i’m just saying that they may not be sharing the absolute truth. human experiences are never identical, so advice can never be absolute. cater that advice to fit your narrative.

if someone tells you to scrap your whole personal statement, don’t just agree without a moment to think and delete the document. ask for an explanation or suggestions for improvement, and process it yourself. 🫵

if you took everyone’s advice to heart, you’d be in an endless loop of iteration without forming your own decisions. others’ opinions can help form them, but ultimately, your actions and choices are yours.
