onto today’s topic: value your time ⏲️
don’t be fooled into doing free labour. your time, skills and ideas are worth something. you don’t even have to be compensated with money, but you most definitely should be receiving something equal in value to your time.
of course, this excludes volunteering and simply helping people or loved ones out (if you expect monetary compensation for doing your friend a favour once in a while … maybe rethink what friendship is 😭).
unpaid internships are a joke — you shouldn’t be expected to put in 20+ hours a week for the promise of “experience.” value your time, and set your bar higher. even if it does seem hopeless finding and internship or a gig that will value your time appropriately, just keep trying. don’t succumb to a “last resort” like that.
this doesn’t just apply to jobs or internships, you should value your time in all areas — it’s a testament to your self-respect. if you’ve been left waiting for 10 minutes on a what-was-supposed-to-be 20 minute zoom call, leave. if this was a meeting you were really looking forward to, send a follow-up email asking if now would still be a good time to talk. 📧 if they’re interested in rescheduling or something urgent came up, they’ll let you know.
i typically wait for a maximum of 10 minutes on zoom calls, and i’ll leave if it takes any longer than that. of course, something may have come up for the other person, i’m not denying nor judging them for that, but i also have things to do.
if i respect my own time, others will too.
so hold yourself to a higher degree of respect, you deserve it.
