onto today’s topic: ask for help 🙏
a common answer to the “what is your greatest weakness” interview question is “not asking for help.”
i mean, it’s a weakness that some recruiters can also see as a blessing, so of course it’s a popular answer. i truly think it is a weakness though — one i struggle with as well.
the embarrassment of seeming like an idiot often delays progress by a lot. if you’re onboarding onto an internship and have been struggling with a bug in your code for a while despite watching youtube videos and looking up solutions, just ask your supervisor. 😭 of course, you should always first try to figure something out yourself, but if you’re stumped you’re better off just asking for help.
your manager isn’t going to think you’re dumb for asking a question, they will expect it.
a simple example is the learning curve at the gym. i had no idea how to use most machines and would spend most of my sessions last week just watching youtube videos or looking at diagrams for form.
i found it to be an inefficient use of my time and now just ask someone to show me how to do an exercise LOL. this goes hand in hand with embracing being a beginner. 📈
knowing whether or not you’re bothering someone lies in some pretty basic eq, but most people are willing to help. judging someone for asking for help reflects poorly on their character, not yours.
ask for help! stop fruitlessly struggling alone.
