breaking out of the lazy loop

onto today’s topic: breaking out of the lazy loop 😴 

both times when i came home from sf and from tanzania, i fell into this loop of laziness. honestly, i’m chalking it up to some well-needed rest and recovery basking in the comfort of being with my family. i forgive myself for it.

however, when i’m on the grind, the lazy loop is fatal. as soon as i even think “it’s okay, i can do this tomorrow,” it’s game over. 😵 when in this cycle, i continuously push things off for later and lay in bed doing absolutely nothing, rationalizing my actions to be “for my mental health.” i promise doomscrolling on tiktok isn’t doing anything for my mental health.

here’s how i avoid falling into this loop:

1) i book myself out in the mornings ☀️: either with some sort of virtual meeting, or in-person event elsewhere. i don’t succumb to laziness if i have a commitment to someone else. when i start my day this way instead of hitting snooze on my alarm, i already set the tone for the remainder of the day.

2) i sustain my bursts of motivation through my habits 🗓️: laziness is often excused by a lack of motivation. i’ve instilled certain habits in my lifestyle to act as a defense mechanism against this (ex. writing this blog). my dedication to keeping up my streak for a habit tends to outweigh any laziness.

3) i get ready every day 👕: this has the same rationale as my first point: setting the right tone for my day. if i need to get things done and look the part, then i’ll also act the part and execute. self-care is the first thing compromised when laziness hits, and this strategy mitigates that.

it’s okay to have times when you just sleep and drift through the day. i need them too sometimes — days of nothingness. don’t let that trickle into being a routine though, it’s tough to get out of that cycle.
