onto today’s topic: more to adulting than i thought 👴
after taking a step out of my little bubble at home where i could wake up to my mom’s homemade paratha for breakfast every other morning, i realized there's a lot more to adulting than i initially thought.
i overlooked the mental load of always having to figure out what to eat, planning transportation from one place to another, keeping track of expenses, maintaining a healthy diet, and so much more. 😵💫 adulting isn’t just getting a full-time job one day and carrying on with life.
leaving the comfort of my home and my parents’ care for 3 months while in sf served me this experience of being a fully-autonomous adult — both mentally and financially. surprisingly enough, rather than the most tiring part being financial stress or piecing together public transportation routes, it was always related to my health. 🧘♀️
at home, i didn’t have to worry about food at all. ingredients were always stocked for me to make lunch and my parents would always take turns cooking dinner. that too, a different dish every day! before living alone i wouldn’t have really thought much of it, but being able to think of and cook something different every day is so impressive. 🧑🍳 i cannot do it at all, which is why my #1 strategy for taking off this health-related mental load (both nutrition & fitness) was making it extremely repeated and scheduled.
after 3ish weeks of struggling and trying to replicate my parents’ pro adulting skill, i opted for just rotating the same couple of meals out every week (with some variety introduced by different events/hangouts with friends). i also stuck to a consistent habit of rollerblading for 1-2 hours every evening and made it a point to walk every time the destination was <30 mins away. 🚶♀️
maybe eventually i’ll level up to having consistent variation, but for now i take off that overlooked adulting mental load by making my lifestyle very scheduled.
yeaaah adulting might seem a little scary, but this short taste was honestly a blast. :)
