onto today’s topic: yap break 🗣️
i have now adopted a new modified pomodoro method (throwback to climbodoro) for doing my work, especially in a group-study/co-working environment. for longer sessions spanning 2+ hours, i’ll do sprints of working for 45-ish minutes, and then take a “yap break” for 10 minutes.
the timings aren’t super strict — we mostly follow whatever the vibe is. although the vibe can be quite dangerous to follow if we’re feeling particularly social. 😭 it’s pretty helpful to have someone in the group keeping the productivity in check though.
turns out, we always have a lot to say so our yap breaks are perfect. instead of taking a break on our phones, we’ll just talk to each other about anything other than the work in front of us. otherwise, it’s completely silent while we’re working.
before practicing this strategy, i wasn’t a huge fan of studying in groups because i found it difficult to focus. i now realize that the company is pretty comforting, especially when we’ve established the norms of ‘work now, yap later.’ it’s fun spending time with friends even if we’re not doing super exciting things all the time, but maybe that’s just my favourite love language of quality time creeping up on me.
my friends and i love to yap, but we also need to lock in. naturally, we turned it into a productivity hack. 😁
