onto today’s topic: do i agree with my mbti? 🪄

according to the myers-briggs test, my personality type is entj, which is the commander. this blog post does a good job explaining some of the cognitive functions behind my personality type.

before i get into the parts i agree and disagree with for my personality, i want to say that i believe the letters (e/i, n/s, f/t, p/j) don’t really tell you anything substantial about your personality type. 🪞

the information that’s interesting to learn about your mbti are the cognitive functions, and how they’re ranked. for example, my dominant cognitive function is extraverted thinking, auxiliary is introverted intuition, tertiary is extraverted sensing and inferior is introverted feeling. that might just seem like a bunch of nerdy jargon to you but i’ll break down their general implications and why i agree/disagree:

focused on goal-setting and detailed planning
with my work, i need goals to function as depicted by the entj mbti. what am i working towards? completion isn’t a goal — do i want to increase engagement by x%? get to a certain # of users? i can’t progress with a project if i don’t take the time to set up my goals. similarly, i can’t function most days if i don’t have a plan for what i want to do with my time. ⏲️ i time block my schedule every day with meetings, work blocks, events and more. at a micro-level, i’m very detail-oriented and a huge planner, but at a macro-level i’m a lot more spontaneous (i’ll make a blog post on that soon).

naturally take charge of decision-making
i’ve found that i default to taking on a leadership role in all sorts of settings (both personal & professional), and this is a key trait for an entj type.

uncomfortable/awkward expressing vulnerability
the last main thing i agree with for my type is experiencing discomfort around expressing vulnerability. this is something i’m working on, but it’s really challenging for me to communicate about when i’m upset. it’s easier to avoid it all together and get over it, which isn’t necessarily healthy for myself or my relationships.

very focused on the future
i’m not very future-minded as the typical entj type is — i don’t have a 5 year plan and i stay away from making one. i literally decided to move to sf for 3 months only 1 week before my flight there. 🛩️ i have general goals for the year ahead of me, but i don’t have a concrete vision for my long-term future. this might be something to work on, but i’m quite content focusing on the here-and-now.

difficulty understanding others’ emotions
entj types are not typically very emotionally intelligent, and this is one of the bigger buckets i disagree with for myself. i’m quite sensitive to others’ emotions and their actions. i pick up on social cues pretty quick and factor it into my decision-making process.

🟡 energized from social settings
i’m an ambivert to the core, so i don’t really always prefer socialization as my method for replenishing energy as most entjs do. i wrote a more detailed post on this here!

this post ended up being way longer than i expected — i love nerding out about personality types! what’s your mbti?
